South Africans Shun Home Team Tickets for World Cup

altDanny Jordaan, chief executive officer of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee, has appealed to South Africans to support Bafana Bafana, the host nation’s team. He said:

"This will be the first time in World Cup history that the host nation are not topping the ticket sales list. It will be tragic if this trend continues. The sales locally are good for other countries, but not Bafana matches and that is something we have to address urgently."

Bafana players and the South African Football Association must shoulder some of the blame for the fans apathy. Bafana, who in 1996 won the African Nations Cup and were ranked in the top 20 in the world in that year, have slipped to 85th in the world rankings and are the lowest ranked team in the World Cup.

Sales for the other African nations in the tournament, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Angola and Algeria have not been much better. Less than 100 000 tickets have been sold to their fans for the competition, which kicks off on June 11 at the new Soccer City Stadium.

Said Jordaan:

"We want this World Cup to be an African World Cup and yet so far none of the African teams involved are coming to the party."

Metal worker's union Numsa on Wednesday called on World Cup organisers to reduce ticket prices. Spokesperson Castro Ngobese said in a statement:

"We strongly believe that the low purchases of the tickets are a manifestation of the sharpening class realities in our country and beyond our borders, wherein the ordinary people can't even afford basic necessities such as bread, milk and a decent meal."
