| New Ticketing Process for World Cup 2010 Meets With Fans' Approval |
World Cup Officials announced on Friday that tickets will be available over the counter in Africa starting in April 2010 - in an attempt to lift local sales, where fewer than 100,000 have been sold.Previously, locals could only apply through FIFA’s online system or at FNB bank branches, but with just ten percent of the population with internet access at home and many in settlements without bank accounts, tickets were hard to get for most. The current World Cup sales cycle, which ends this month, was intended to sell the majority of the three million tickets available for the tournament, but only a third of those were sold by last week. To deal with the issue, FIFA added a new phase to begin on February ninth, where over-subscribed nations will have the chance to buy extra tickets. But with the cheapest costing €15 and many fans earning €300 a month, it will be too expensive for most. Leslie Sedibe, the new CEO of the SAFA (South African Football Association) has admitted this week in the African press, that access for local fans is a major worry, but vowed that a solution can be found. He said in an article: “Our people need to rally behind Bafana by buying the tickets now. We are encouraging people to go buy the tickets. We are also meeting with FIFA before the end of this month to discuss this.” Related Articles: Hundreds of ticketing professionals attend 2nd annual Ticket Summit in New York City by Alfred Branch Jr.
