In the past 12 months the singer, real name Stefani Germanotta, has seen a rapid rise to fame, selling eight million albums and 35 million singles as well as selling out a string of shows across the globe.
Other winners at the Brit Awards included Lily Allen, who was named best British female artist. Dizzee Rascal won best British male artist, while Kasabian picked up the awards for best British group. Best British album went to Florence and the Machine for Lungs. JLS won best British single and best British breakthrough act. Robbie Williams was honoured with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music. He has won more Brit Awards than any other – 11 as a solo performer and four with his former band mates Take That.
