| Bittersweet Win - Portsmouth Reach FA Cup Final - Shockingly Beat Spurs |
Just one day after demotion from the Barclays Premier League was assured, Portsmouth produced one of the most remarkable results of the season yesterday when they defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Wembley to reach the FA Cup Final.
Frederic Piquionne broke the deadlock in the ninth minute of extra time. Former Spurs midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng added a penalty kick 18 minutes later. Portsmouth goalkeeper David James, the only remaining player in Sunday's starting lineup from the 2008 team that won the title, told the Associated Press, "This season encapsulates just about every emotion you can have as a footballer and today has been absolutely superb." Coupled with their relegation in a very tough season, Portsmouth became the first Premier League team to go into bankruptcy protection last month and has court-appointed insolvency experts running the club while trying to find a buyer. But winning the semifinal will provide about €3 million in prize money and ticketing revenue. However, Portsmouth’s financial plight leaves a doubt over whether they will be allowed to take their place in the Europa League. With Chelsea certain to play in the Champions League, Portsmouth would normally expect to claim the Europa League place awarded to the FA Cup winners. But as a club in administration they were not entitled to apply for the required UEFA licence. The victory was all the sweeter for the fact that Tottenham are almost a Portsmouth old boys’ club. Harry Redknapp, the manager, several of his coaches and three of yesterday’s Tottenham team have moved to White Hart Lane since the 2008 victory. Portsmouth manager Avram Grant will face Chelsea, his former team, in the May 15 final.
