So far, ticket sales are reflecting a growing interest in what – by Broadway standards – is a risky enterprise. This is because American Idiot turns up its nose at the usual Broadway staple of romance, love rivalry and sing-along and instead plumps for a loud, punky, guitar-based saga of city hell and suburban pain. Adding to the alternative punk theme is the fact that the public is allowed to bring alcohol to their seats during the performance. The show seems to have ingredients aplenty for generating headlines, a recent reviewer from US magazine spin writes: "By the end of the 90-minute performance, the stage had been witness to half a dozen chugged beers, a couple of joints, several syringes of heroin, one drug-related suicide, one OD and one bout of very realistic-looking sex on a futon."
