Claudio Abbado Cancels La Scala Return due to Illness

Conductor Claudio Abbado has cancelled two highly anticipated concerts that were to mark his return to La Scala after 25 years. According to the famous Milanese opera house, illness forced the cancellations on June 4 and June 6.

 

But la Scala added that  Abbado, it’s former musical director, intends to launch a new project with the opera house in the near future.

The 76-year-old is presently under a doctor's care in Berlin. His doctor said in a separate statement that Abbado will require several weeks of care and diagnosis. Abbado underwent stomach cancer surgery about 10 years ago.
