British and American World Cup Ticket Resellers Caught - Facing Jail Time

altOne British and one American ticket reseller could face lengthy jail terms in South Africa over possessing World Cup tickets for resale worth £300,000, reports the Daily Express. "The only people who are allowed to be selling World Cup tickets are Match," Police spokesman Col. Vishnu Naidoo said, referring to FIFA's official ticketing agent, MATCH, partially owned by FIFA head Sepp Blatter's nephew. Colonel Naidoo said it was illegal for anyone other than Fifa subsidiary Match to sell World Cup tickets. Karen Sorensen, 37, and Brendan Evans, 38, were arrested on Thursday at their hotel in Johannesburg after detectives seized 122 World Cup tickets, several laptops, paperwork and mobile phones.

Sorensen, from Wimbledon, south-west London, and Evans, a Zimbabwe-born U.S. citizen, appeared before a special court in Randburg, Johannesburg, charged with breaking two trade laws. The pair were each released on £1,300 bail and ordered to return on July 28.

Thursday's arrests were on charges of illegally selling and distributing World Cup hospitality packages in contravention of South Africa's Trade Practices Act and the Unfair Business Practices Act, which covers ticket sales and distribution.
